While India has given many prominent chess grandmasters and players, here are some of the popular chess players in India you need to know about!

The past few years have been very lucky for the Indian chess industry with many victories on the Indian side. More amazingly, even children and teenagers have made the country proud by winning various international championships. Here we bring to your attention some of the Indian chess players who are leading the country in various national and international competitions.

1. Viswanathan Anand

Viswanathan Anand, the Indian chess grandmaster was a five-time world chess champion. He was the first person to become the first Indian Grandmaster in 1988. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan award.

2. Vidit Gujrati

Vidit Gujrathi was the captain of the Chess Olympiad 2020 and won the gold medal of the competition. Currently, he is ranked 21 in the world and 2 in India. He was awarded the Grandmaster title in January 2013.

3. Srinath Narayanan

Grandmaster and chess trainer, Srinath Narayanan has many feats to his name. He was vice-captain of the Indian Chess Olympiad team. Narayanan also participated in the U12 World Championship in 2005.

4. Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa

Bringing the nation to the level of exploits, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa has captured hearts over the past two years. He obtained the title of international master at the age of 10 while he obtained the title of grandmaster at 12 in 2018.

5. Pentala Harikrishna

Chess player Harikrishna became India’s youngest grandmaster on September 11, 2001 at the age of 14 until another player broke the record. He was also Commonwealth Championship champion in 2001, World Junior champion in 2004 and Asian individual champion in 2011.

6. Koneru Humpy

Koneru Humpy received immense popularity for winning the FIDE Women’s Rapid Chess Championship in 2019. In 2002, she also became the youngest woman at the time to win the Grandmaster title at the age of 15. !

The Indian Chess Grandmaster was awarded the Grandmaster title at the age of 13 years, 4 months and 20 days in 2006. He was also awarded the Arjuna Award in 2010 by the Government of India.

8. Harika Dronavalli

Harika Dronavalli was also a recipient of the FIDE Grandmaster title. She has won three bronze medals at the Women’s World Chess Championship, in 2012, 2015 and 2017. Dronavalli was also awarded the Arjuna Prize for the years 2007-08 by the Government of India.
