Independent school chess aficionados in Brentwood, Essex continue to achieve incredible competitive success.

After going from strength to strength to reach some of the highest echelons of the sport, the Brentwood School team recently qualified for the final of the National Under-19 Schools Chess Championship.

Young chess enthusiasts will be among 20 schools across the country taking part in the two-day tournament in the Midlands to decide the national champions.

After losing 3.5/2.5 in the East Anglian final to Norwich School, Brentwood qualified through an online repechage competition.

Team members Nina Pert, Max Pert, Jaden Omoruyi, Shayan Gohil, Taej Siddharth and Rostislav Kovalev won the quick play event by amassing 44 wins from 60 individual matches in 90 minutes, becoming the only winning school.

Robin Slade, Brentwood School Chess Coach, said: “Brentwood’s qualification for the Under-19 event was made all the more impressive by the age of the school’s players.

“Our entire team is in grade 9 or below, although the competition is open to students up to grade 13.”

Michael Bond, their very proud manager, congratulated the team “on their magnificent achievement” and said: “The future of chess certainly looks very bright in Brentwood.”

As the players continue to achieve success as a team, other accolades have also been awarded to some of the individual players.

Nina, who is in year 9, will take part in the English Women’s Championship later this month as one of 12 guest players and her brother Max, in year 7, will take part in the English Adult Championship as one of the 25 players invited. Max will face many of England’s most successful players, including Brentwood School’s own Head of Chess and his father IM Richard Pert.
