Maroons Chess Club Win National Team Chess Title

Maroons Chess Club dominated the Sri Lanka National Team Chess Championship to win the gold medal at Shastrananda Navodya Vidyalaya Dehiwala. Champion Maroons Chess Club played against Black & Gold Chess Club in the final round managed to score a remarkable 5 points out of 6 possible matches Maroons Club which was formed in 2013 won their 1st national team victory in 2018 and 4 years later, they made a major comeback by regaining the title.

Prior to the final round, the 1st position Jaffna Hindu College team lost the final round to Kandyan Lions Chess Club, allowing Kandyan Lions Chess Club to win the silver medal. The Fisher Chess Club and the Mayor Chess club were able to claim the 3rd and 4th positions respectively.

The Sri Lanka Interclub Chess Championships held annually was later changed in 2022 to the Sri Lanka National Team Chess Championship and is organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL).

Maroons club team members include KD Tharusha Madushan, Shehan Seneviratne, Thenuka Kuruwita, EDSChandula, Kokila Punchihewa, CC Weerasinghe, TKUyanhewage and FM Sajith Peiris.

The Kandyan Lions Chess Club included KAPMAriyawansa, CL Jayaweera, AJKDBandara, Achinthya Kaluarachchi, Manushka Yatawala, Dhanushka Bandara, AS Galagamaarachchi and NPG Sajith Lahiru.

The Third Place Fisher Chess Club included Lisara Tennakoon, CM Jayasundara, Kashyapa Kulasekara, FMRS Kalugampitiya, Dishal Weerasekara, Romesh Weerawardane, (IM) Bhanuka Thawalampola and KPRN Samaranayake.
