National chess players win medals at the European Championship

Azerbaijani chess player Gunay Mammadzada won a silver medal at the 2022 European Women’s Chess Championship held in Prague, Czech Republic, reports Azernews.

Gunay Mammadzada has already won the International Master (IM) and Women’s Grandmaster (WGM) titles.

She was world youth champion under 10 and European youth champion under 8 and under 14. Mammadzada is a two-time women’s national champion from Azerbaijan (2017 and 2019).

She has represented Azerbaijan at the Chess Olympiad, World Team Chess Championship and European Team Chess Championship, winning team and individual bronze medals at the latter in 2019. Mammadzada has a maximum FIDE rating of 2,473 and was ranked as high as world No. 21 among women.

Another national chess player, Ulviyya Fataliyeva, won bronze at the tournament.

The chess player holds the title of female grandmaster. In 2010 she won the European Youth Chess Championship in the girls U14 age category. Ulviyya Fataliyeva also placed first in the European Youth Chess Championship for girls U18 (2014).

In 2017, she won a silver medal at the Azerbaijan Women’s Chess Championship

Ulviyya Fataliyeva represented Azerbaijan at the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku, the World Women’s Team Chess Championship in Khanty-Mansiysk (2017) and two European Women’s Team Chess Championships in 2015 and 2017.

In 2014, she was awarded the FIDE Woman International Master (WIM) title and received the FIDE Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title three years later.

Meanwhile, Polish GM Monika Socko won the 2022 European Women’s Chess Championship.

The chess tournament brought together 123 chess players from 28 countries.

Chess players from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, Denmark, Lithuania, Estonia and other countries participated in the championship.
