A new chess club opens in Stamford this month.

Coffeehouse Chess Club is launched by MindSpace Stamford on November 24th at 7pm.

MindSpace Stamford is a charitable organization dedicated to improving the mental health and well-being of people.

“Coffeehouse” is an informal style of chess said to emphasize the social aspects of the game.

Chess is reportedly experiencing an “unprecedented boom” right now, following Netflix’s drama “The Queen’s Gambit” and as many people discovered online chess during the coronavirus pandemic.

MindSpace’s new club will allow novice and experienced chess players of all skill levels to meet in real life and participate in a social game of chess over coffee and cake.

Volunteer, club organizer and chess enthusiast Jamie Sutherland said:

“What I love about chess is that it gives people of different backgrounds, ages and cultures the chance to connect, but traditional chess clubs can be a little intimidating, especially for beginners.

“Coffeehouse Chess provides a friendly environment for people of all experience levels to play for fun, improve their game and meet new people.”

MindSpace founder Dr Dan Petrie added:

“I love that we can provide a space to connect through an activity like chess that allows for a feeling of learning, whether you are new or experienced, by hitting several of your 5 ways to feel good in one. one time !”

Coffeehouse Chess will take place at MindSpaceat 39 Broad Street, Stamford, Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m.
