Tamil Nadu Government School Students to Meet International Chess Players at Olympiad 2022
In an effort to increase the cognitive skills of children, the government of Tamil Nadu slowly mandated that chess be taught in public schools. In this case, the state government has given public school students the opportunity to meet international chess players at the 44th International Chess Olympiad, which will be held at Mahabalipuram near Chennai from July 28 to August 10 of this year.
The 44th International Chess Olympiad where chess players from around 150 counties were to participate in the “Chess Festival”. The biggest chess series after World Chess Championship 2013 will be held in India. Precisely the biggest sporting event ever held in India which also hosts the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai. The International Chess Federation gave permission to hold matches in Chennai due to the Ukraine-Russia war, which was previously scheduled to be held in Moscow. Following this, the government of Tamil Nadu and the Chess Federation of India planned to hold the Chess Olympiad in Mahabalipuram.
According to the officials, this year’s chess competition will be special for students as the eligible winners/students selected in the school-level competition will be taken to attend the World Olympic Chess Championship. Besides students, school-level chess coaches will also have the chance to attend the Chess Olympiad in Chennai. Eventually, the student’s interaction with international chess players will encourage them to take the sport to the next level, the officials added.
Meanwhile, the competition to select the students eligible to watch the Chess Olympiad was held at the district level of Tiruvallur, in which 175 students participated. Students who get first place in the competition will be allowed to watch the Chess Olympiad with free accommodation.
Accordingly, on behalf of the Tiruvallur District Chess Association, the district level chess tournament for under 15s started on June 14 at the Maharishi Vidhya Mandir School in Kavarappettai. 175 students including 50 students from public schools in Tiruvallur district participated in the competition.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners based on points and the top two will have the opportunity to watch the World Chess Tournament in Mahabalipuram.
“The final list of students will be prepared once the local school-level chess competitions are over. This initiative was taken to motivate students to learn more tips from different Olympiad coaches, apart from the interactive sessions,” the officials said.
