Witbank High has winning chess players

Chess players from Witbank High School were good in the game last weekend in the Wafa Wafa Chess Tournament.

On June 4, the eMalahleni Chess Academy Under-17s played at Emrabulweni Park in Ackerville.

The tournament had 70 players from 13 different schools around eMalahleni taking part.

Bonginsimbi Comprehensive School, Witbank High, Khayalethu Primary, Thandoxolo School, Ogies Combined School, Hlalanikahle Primary, Khonzimfundo Primary School, Duvha Park Primary School, Edu College and Siyathela Crèche all attended.


Witbank High give their opponents a hard time

After five rounds of competition, the judges had the scorecards to determine the winners.

Bonginsimbi’s Thabang Makhubela took third place; Second place went to Witbank High as Prayer Philias lost just one match in the entire tournament with 16-year-old Bavuseni Ngwenya of Witbank High emerging victorious with a perfect record winning all five sets.

Bavuseni, from Ezinambeni, said he only started playing the game earlier this year. he uses chess as a stress reliever.


Witbank High School launches bullying awareness campaign

The Grade 11 student believes chess can unite people and teach life, as it is more of a ‘mind game’.

Event organizer Yeye Masilela said the tournament will be held monthly going forward to develop players as they already have 20 newbies to the tournament so they are looking to build on that to go from the front.
